This morning I started off straight away to try to find a bike. I had read online that there was a bike shop that sold cheap second hand bikes, but it was quite far away. Nevertheless I bundled up, and walked the 30 minutes to the shop. Which had been converted into a shoe and clothes store. Great.
So I ended up walking to uni, as I had some meetings with potential supervisors. After another hours walk I finally arrived, and started to thaw out. This was probably the impetus for me getting sick. I my meetings, heard some interesting ideas, and had lunch with Luuk (studied at UNSW) and Rob (a PhD). I was already starting to feel pretty exhausted and a bit under the weather, so I ordered the onion soup, and left uni pretty early around 3pm.
Fortunately the school has a bike that they keep around, so I was allowed to take that. It needed a few repairs, a new tyre, some oil etc but it didn't cost much to repair at the uni bikeshop. I got to ride home on my old, very dirty but functional bike. It takes about 10 minutes to get home. By the time I got home, I was exhausted, sore, and feeling really shitty. I pretty much just showered and collapsed into bed.
Friday I spent all day on the couch, sick as a dog.
Saturday morning I was feeling a little better, and did a big food shop. I also bought a winter jacket, a scarf, leather boots, and longjohns. I'm not going to let the cold get to me again. Saturday afternoon I started feeling crappy again, and developed a persistent, wracking cough. When I tried to buy drugs for it, my Australian cards were declined so I couldnt buy any (which I later learnt was from unscheduled maintenance... grrrr).
Sunday - all shops are closed, so I again spent all day dealing with a cough and runny nose with no drugs.
So yeah - not a great start to the trip! Serves me right for not dressing for the weather I guess!
