You know all those times when people are randomly selected to perform certain tasks. Well this is not random - it is a list and I am on it! It started at the airport where I was randomly selected to complete a survey on the service quality at OR Tambo. There was plenty of seating but the price of a sandwich was outrageous.

About 24 hours after departing home I joined the immigration queue at Dulles Airport. It took two hours to go through and guess what - yes you guessed it - I was randomly selected for an in depth Customs check. Thank goodness everything was as it should be but another hour went by before I emerged into the Washingtom daylight. Overcast and not that cold but a freezing wind.

My journey wasn't over. First the Washington Flyer Shuttle, then the metro and lastly a bus which was ever so kind to drop me at the door. At last I had arrived.  Surprise surprise they are also experiencing toad works and it is also causing delays. Although I was surprised to see that the cars parked in the constructions area included Mercedes Benz's.

Despite feeling ready to drop, all I dropped was my suitcase and off I went. I am down 14th street which runs all through the centre of Washington right out to where I am staying.

Back on the bus I went all the way to Pensylvania Avenue. Jumping off the bus I walked towards the Capitol. Trying to take it all in. It seems so unreal to be here at last. After that I went to the Botanical Gardens where there is an Orchid exhibit. It is amazing. I never knew there were that many types or Orchids.

I wandered down the mall and went into the Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian.  WOW!  Bringing history to life.

I tried my first Pretzel. Great but far too much. Then I sat on a bench in the Mall and enjoyed a lovely chat with a Gentleman from Georgia. What a wonderful way to spend some time. Sitting out in the fresh air (Ignoring the freezing cold wind), looking to the right to see the Capitol and looking to the left at the Lincoln Memorial.

Battling the wind I took refuge in the first building I found as I was retracing my steps to the bus route. I ended up in the Old Post Office so took the tower to the top to look out over the city. I got my first glimpse of the White House which is on my agenda for tomorrow.

Sad to say but I resorted to McDonalds for supper. I tried to find a supermarket / grocery store but realised I had not idea what these stores were called.

The hours started to catch up on me so the long wait at the bus stop didn't help. I am now in my room, drinking lemon water and watching some tv.  My eyes are struggling to stay awake so I will say goodnight and catch you tomorrow!
