Vancouver may sometimes be described as the Hollywood of the north, although the city itself is far from being compared to that crass neighborhood, with enough TV shows and films being shot here to pass many a Vancouverian rainy day.

Going for a wander to do a little location scouting it took me to see some of Vancouver's more interesting architecture from the downtown art gallery to the very smart looking Coliseum inspired library just a couple of toothless gladiators and some hungry looking lions away from the real thing.

The city will also be getting even more TV viewers for being the home to the 2010 winter Olympics although a currently controversial decision according to some here with the countdown clock in the city centre under guard in case of vandalism. It is the other venue for these games though up at Whistler which brought me to Vancouver in the first place but a mixture of poor weather and inability to get any accommodation unless booked before the first ever Olympics meant I had settled on just having some snow fun at the other local ski slopes just north of the city.

However after hearing stories from many passing through the hostel who have been recently it didn't take much to change that idea to 'sod that'. Although costing probably just as much to host the games themselves I was determined to make a day trip up to what is called the number 1 ski resort in North America with the number of arms in slings and legs on crutches around here a solid testament to that.

An early night then to get up at 4am to make it for the first bus up there in the morning - actually those closer slopes don't sound quite so bad now.
