I had been pondering these last few days about whether or not to go to Yosemite National Park wondering if I felt well enough to go hiking around it. Although not back to 100% health it was a place I had bookmarked as somewhere I had really wanted to go when I was over here so decided I would trot over that way today.

The trotting though was done by a shuttle bus out to Yosemite Bug hostel where I would be shacking up for a few days just outside the park itself and the first Hosteling International hostel I'd stayed in while in America. Only 3 of us on the bus for the 4 hour-ish journey to the park with a couple from Boston riding along too who were friendly although very quiet.

Riding shotgun in the mini-bus the trip passed quick enough arriving in Midpines at the hostel a wooden cabin affair nestled in the trees all appearing very homely and with a huge dorm completely empty.

A quick lunch later and once they had found some wheels to take us we were driven a few miles down the road and up to the top of a hill where we were left with some bikes and a great bumpy dirt road to make our way back down. The state of the road with some holes resembling the grand canyon and the steepness meant the Bostonites took it pretty daintily coming down not being all that confident on two wheels although I nearly went over the steep edge myself a few times. Great fun anyway.

Joining up with the car that took us down beside the river at the foot of the hill we took some time out enjoying the natural seclusion beside the river only broken by the odd stone being skimmed across the river and the discovery of a dead deer in the water a little ways down stream. Their aren't any bears around here are there?

Going for a walk by myself around the hostel area when we got back the trail I was following just sort of evaporated at one point leaving me in front of a bush with the way I had come being the only clear way anywhere. Walking around for ages trying to re-find the path I was out of luck as well as light with it getting pretty dark by now with thoughts of those bears returning. Spotting a light through the undergrowth I just stuck my head down and stomped through the bushes letting it lead me back to the hostel stumbling onto an earlier portion of the track along the way.

The hostel's restaurant seemed a popular place with the locals soon filling up in the evening with valentines couples while I nabbed the best seat in the house right in front of a big roaring log fire with a book in hand. Figured I would be needing as much energy as possible for tomorrow looking at the size of some of the hills in the park. And the bears.
