A former AFS student from Germany arrived to stay with us yesterday who had spent 11 months in the country resulting in her speaking good Thai putting my feeble attempts to shame.
During her stay here they gave her the Thai name of 'Mali' with them having wanted to give me a name for some time but with every Thai name meaning something I have so far been wary of their suggestions giving the way we joke with each other. They seem to be suggesting names meaning 'one who brings good fortune' though I think more appropriately it should be 'one who brings misfortune'.
Still feeling tired from yesterday I had a small pick me up at lunch with some bread that seems to always be drizzled or stuffed with something sweet and sugary such as honey or caramelized sugar which probably explains why bread is called 'Kanom Bang' with 'Kanom' used to describe all Thai sweets.
Some big regional music and dance competition was taking place later in the week so I took the opportunity to see them practicing in the afternoon which as enthusiastic the girls were at the dances most of the boys looked less than thrilled, guess something's don't change no matter which continent your on.
