I dropped off Wendy and Jen at the San Lorenzo Market and then had a feast of art staring with the Church of San Lorenzo, the Medici parish church, with the unfinished exterior, and then the Medici Chapel with an absolute feast of Michelangelo sculpture. The so called New Sacristy was created to house the tombs of well known Medicis with Michelangelo as the designer and Pope Leo X, the patron (he was Lorenzo's son who became the youngest cardinal and then pope after Julius II). There are two incredible tombs to lesser known Medicis, Guiliano and Lorenzo, and to the side a modest sarcophagus with the remains of Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Guiliano, who was slain in the Pazzi Conspiracy of 1478. I then headed back to the Duomo for the unheralded, but outstanding Museum of the Duomo which houses works by Michelangelo, Donatello, and Pisano. We had lunch and then visited the Accademia where is located Michelangelo's David and his unfinished sculptures, another extraordinary museum. We were getting Stendhal's Syndrome, the feeling of dizziness and nausea and fatigue caused by too much amazing art too fast ! Back to the hotel to rest up for dinner at I do not recall where, because when I made my journal entry I had bigger fish to fry. Well, apparently after dinner, Jen and Wendy went back to the hotel and I ventured out into the "unknown" where I simply strolled around the city for 3 hours ! I headed down via Proconsolo to the Ponte Vecchio where I sat for a while right near the statue of Cellini at mid bridge. At that hour the jewelry stores are closed, and Africans selling knockoffs line the span, until the polizia come to chase them away, only to return a few minutes later. I then headed to my first visit to Oltrarno, the south side of the Arno, walked up to the largest Palazzo in Florence, the Pitti Palace, back across the bridge, up to the Piazza del Duomo, yet again ! It was the first of many solo tours of this magnificent city. I noticed a movie theater playing porno flicks, some fast food places, lots of young people just hanging around. I sat in the hotel lobby, resting, people watching, making idle conversation, as I always love to do on trips. I wrote in my journal and now sounds to me like a wide eyed puppy dog or kid in a toy store. One thing I wrote was a list of things we had so far bought, and it was really starting to add up ! But who cares, we are in Florence. I only slept 3 hrs that night, needles to say, lots of stuff dancing around my head that night for sure.
