Our carload (Mary, Laura and me) arrived in Bright after a nice but quiet drive from Canberra, we thought of stopping in Albury/Wadonga instead but as soon as we arrived in Bright we knew we had made the right decision coming. It was autumn and the trees were all red and orange, and the scenery was fantastic with high mountains surrounding the small town.
We found the hostel easily enough and as it turned out there were only a handful of people there, so we made friends with them all pretty quickly.
After our long journey we didn't want to do too much so we took a brief walk along the riverbank, and then stayed in the TV lounge with the other guests, watching Neighbours. The following day we decided to be more active and take advantage of the nice scenery, so we drove up Mount Buffalo, and parked near the top. We walked the last couple of Kilometres up to the summit, and had our packed lunch and took some pictures, then came down again. We stopped at a haunted forest and a small lake, then found our way back to the hostel and made some dinner. The evening was spent in the pub with the locals and hostel guests, we were entertained by a group of Aussie renderers who were working on the supermarket refurbishment. They were pretty mean with a pool cue, unfortunately not at pool though, but used them as fiddles for when 'The devil came to Georgia' came on the juke box.
We awoke feeling not too bad, and went to hire some bikes for the day ahead. We had Rob (one of the other guests) as a guide and we took off along the old rail trail and then up into the hills. After a while we were all ready for a sit down so we turned round and did the downhill which happened to have a vineyard at the bottom, where we spent an hour or so tasting and buying wine. Then we had to force ourselves back to the bike hire shop and home. In the evening we just watched a DVD and chatted with the other guests.
The next morning Mary and I set off for Melbourne, while Laura had decided to spend the weekend in Bright as some of them were going camping in the mountains, and she was going to catch us up in Melbourne the following week. We had a nice drive down and stopped off in Beechworth, where Ned Kelly was captured. We got to Paul and Rhonda's house in Melbourne in the early evening, and stayed in the first evening, we'd had a long drive and they had just finished work for the week. More to follow once I've finished Melbourne.
