Where I stayed
Checked into our hotel and could not believe that it was the right one
because we had paid only 14 pounds a night and the foyer
was like the Ritz. We found out as the porter proceeded with our
luggage that the front of the building was a 5 star hotel, the Garden
Palace and ours, part of the same hotel group was the Garden hotel, at
the back of the building. Still a good hotel, though, and also, with
most of the same facilities.
Surabaya is like London with 4 times as many cars and 8
motorbikes for each car. A fast flowing river of traffic 24/7. The only
way to cross the road is to be born on the other side. There are no
dead chickens here, they all died years ago.
After checking into the Garden hotel we went to the jazz bar attached for a
very expensive (british prices) drink. We were pleasantly surprised to
see that the French grand prix was about to start, so we stayed to
watch it and consumed a few more beers. Not only were we entertained
by the race, but they also had a 7 piece band playing anything from
Jazz and dance music to 50s-60's-70's-80's songs. Very loud but very
good. We could even see our hotel room from our table.
Oh dear! We could also hear the band from our room when we decided that
sleep was a good idea. An idea only, because it was totally impossible
to do anything until the band had finished - about midnight. Lucky they were good.
Chris decided that shopping was the order of the day after a good
nights rest and we proceeded to spend a 'very pleasant' 5 hours
shopping in Surabaya Mall. I 'really enjoyed it'. We purchased a
selection of ladies things which were placed in a designer bag and we
also bought a small notepad so Chris could write about Surabaya etc.
We purchased rail tickets to Yogyakarta and travel there tomorrow .
