We checked into the Green Tortoise hostel which really does feel like home now. We were in a 4 bed room but after sleeping on a bus with 24 other people who were noisy and sometimes stinky sharing a room with two other people is not a problem.
We dropped off our bags, put some laundry on and got ready to meet Jimmy, Sherman and a few of the other people from the bus. We had decided to go for Chinese at a place Jimmy recommended. The food was good and it was nice to have a sit down meal with everyone. After that we all went back to the hostel and carried drinking and listening to live music. The guy performing was good and he came over to chat to us.
We had a great night sleep and the following day we went into town with Jelle to buy Vans (for Jelle) and we had a supa dupa burger which is an Eco friendly and organic free range place. The burgers were good!
We didn't realise but Hayley had travelled back from Vegas overnight and was now at the hostel! She had arrived and gone for a walk with Jimmy and Sherman early hours in the morning! Go H!
That evening both AK & SJ helped to prepare dinner with Agidio and had a few beers with Jelle and a guy called Forbes from Edinburgh.
We had to move rooms to another 4 bed room and AK and SJ were in single top bunks! It worked out ok though as our room mates never turned up and we had another good sleep.
On Tuesday we went back to Haight/Ashbury and headed toward the park. We had intentions of hiring bikes but they were $30 each so we decided that was too expensive and went for a walk instead. The park is huge and has lots of parks within the park
In the evening we went for $5 Indian food and SJ and H had wine and the boys had beer. We had to move rooms again but this time we were in a private room on the top floor and it was pretty nice. It is a pain changing rooms but at least they could fit us in.
On Wednesday we hired bikes and cycled down to the Golden Gate Bridge and right across it.its a tough route up as there were some steep hills but it was worth it for the views from the top. There were a lot of people cycling across and there was nearly a collision on a few occasions. Also, the 'professional' cyclists got very impatient with us novices!
We again helped Agidio to prepare dinner and AK went on the pub crawl with Jelle, Hayley & Forbes. Jelle is only 20 and you can't drink until you are 21 in America so Alan let Jelle use his driving licence (they kind of look alike if you are drunk and have just slightly better eyesight than Stevie Wonder)
On Thursday Jonas arrived from Vegas and it was time to try and book a rental car for our Pacific coast road trip....this proved to be tougher than we imagined!
We all checked out of our rooms (AK & SJ had again spent the night in a different room) and congregated in the common area to book the car. The best price we got quoted was over $1000 so we needed a plan B
Plan B = stay at the green tortoise hostel one more night and book a car for the following day for about $300. Plan B looked a whole lot more attractive so AK & SJ along with Hayley, Jelle & Jonas decided to go with it.
The only problem was that the green tortoise hostel was full. The manager at the Hostel very kindly agreed to let us sleep in the back office, for $20 each of course. So after the office staff went home at 6pm the put out 5 mattresses with sheets, blankets and pillows and our bedroom was set up. It wasn't too bad apart from the fact that the hostel is located over a night club so it was a bit noisy! The beds were surprisingly comfy.
We woke up on Friday morning before the office staff were due in at 9 and while AK and Jelle went for the car, SJ stayed in the hostel with Hayley and Jonas.
AK returned with the car, another Dodge Caravan, we loaded it up and off we went......to the Chinese across the road for lunch!
And then we were truly off on our road trip to LA
