So after a hearty breakfast of eggs and bacon it was back on the road for the journey to Uluru (Ayers Rock).  One of the great nautual wonders of the world, the sandstone monolith stands 348 metres high and like an iceberg, has most of its bulk below the surface - some say up to 5kms deep.  The Anangu people are Uluru's traditonal custodians and was returned into their care in 1985.  Because it is a sacred site to these people, they prefer if you do not climb it - and anyway because of the high temperature today - the climb was closed anyway.  So I done a small base walk  - the complete base walk is 9.2 kms and we didn't have the time to complete it.

There are alot of stories about how this rock came to be and really is rather surreal to see it from a distance - its just sitting there - in the middle of the outback.

After our walk at Uluru, we went to The Olgas, just to the west of the rock.  This is a massive pile of 36 rock domes estimated to be as much as 500 million years old. After another walk here it was back to Uluru for a barbie and champange to watch the sunset.  This is my last evening in Australia and what a way to spend it....

On the drive back to Alice, the buses, cars and trucks have an obstacle course to complete - its kangaroo dodgems.  It was crazy - at dusk, the roos come out and cross the road and have no sense to wait until the buses have passed - they just go for it when they feel like and usually just as the bus approaches them.  So as you can imagine - there was a bit of road kill.  Not pleasant... but that's life in the outback.  Back in Alice for 1am and tomorrow its time to leave..... but I still have Bali first.
