On Friday it was back to sunshine and we decided to hit that other famous Sydney icon - Bondi beach.  It is a gorgeous beach but once we got there it was really windy - good for the surfers but not for the sunbathers.  We had a dander round and then started on the Bondi to Coogee cliff walk.  This is a 5km walk round the cliffs from Bondi beach to Coogee beach, taking in 5 beaches along the way and beautiful views out over the pacific ocean.  And a very popular walk and run going by the amount of joggers we met.  It was a nice way to see how Sydneysiders start their weekend, BBQs and picnics on the beach, or just sitting out in the sun with a bottle of vino - its all very relaxed.

Saturday is Mardi Gras day.  And all I can say is WOW!  You definitely would not get this type of parade at home.  The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras has grown from a local gay pride event to being arguably the most spectacular gay and lesbian event in the world.  Just recently it was llisted amongst the 10 most spectacular costume events.  It has an unrivalled reputation for glitz, glamour, satire and sass. It's a celebration of pride and diversity that never forgets to deliver its messages with humour and pizazz.
Mardi Gras Parade has grown to become a major cultural event and its appeal stretches well beyond Sydney's gay community and its close supporters. Indeed over half a million Sydneysiders turn out each year to cheer on the parade. Joining them are thousands of overseas visitors lining the route - from US circuit party boys to Japanese office ladies.  The bizarre thing is that it is very inclusive - the police start the parade and includes everyone from the lifeguards to churches to gyms to to schools to gay rights organisations.  The effort that goes into it is amazing and it is so well run.  The colours and costumes hit straight at you and there are some sights along the way too!!.  It lasted well over 2 hours and was one hell of a party and great fun.

Today - Sunday - well its raining again - which messes up our plans for a day at Manly beach.  Think we are just going to take a cruise on the river instead and then hit The Mercantile pub where Maybelline worked, for the afternoon music session - and then see what happens from there.  Hopefully we'll get the beach tomorrow but the weather is so unpredictable - who knows!!
