It's 7:50am and our hotel phone rings, it's our tour guide for the Great wall of China letting me know she is outside waiting for us with the bus.   We quickly grab our kids and belongings and rush out the door with excitement.  As the mini bus pulls out from our hotel,  Lisa our tour guide informs us we are quite lucky to be going to the Great Wall today, as the temperature will be sunny with a top of 17 degrees and there is just one other couple she needs to pick up.   We pick up the couple who we will be sharing our Great Wall experience,  they are a friendly couple from Sweden.   As we head out of Beijing city and onto the major freeway Lisa informs us of the itinerary for the day, visiting the Ming Tombs, Chinese Medicine Clinic, a Jade Factory tour, lunch then off to the Great Wall.   The Chinese Medicine Clinic was quite interesting for me, I had a 75 year old man diagnose me with a weak kidney explaining that this is the cause of me always feeling tired and stressed.  So he prescribed me with some Chinese Medicine that was worth 300 AUD. I thanked him for his time, advice and told him I would consider it.....which of course I  wouldn't and waited for Zinije's diagnosis.   We complete most of our itinerary and have only the great wall left to see,  finally my time has come to visit this fascinating wonder of the world.  I've been interested in the Great Wall of China since I first learnt about it in history class, which was when I was 12 and now I will be exploring it with my wife and kids.  There are various parts of the Great wall that you can see in Beijing and we've decided to see it from the town of Mutianyu, it's a little further out and is supposed to have better panoramic views.   As our bus pulls into the village, I jump out of the bus and notice souvenir shops everywhere in front of a cable car which will take us up to 643 metres, where we will start our great wall hike.  At this point the kids were more excited about hopping into a cable car rather seeing the Great wall, I remind the kids the importance of the great wall and explain a little of it's history......not sure how much of the info got retained though.   We reach the top of the cable car and the view is spectacular in all directions, in front I can see the great wall winding it's way up the mountain and behind us the view of smaller towns surrounded by mountains.  As we start to walk along the wall I notice we have to keep a very close eye on the kids as there are very steep steps without rails, broken stones and uneven steps and sections of the wall where the kids could easily jump over if they tried.  We manage to do about 40mins of solid walking in one direction which was a great effort from the kids, but they are pretty tired at this point, so we decide to sit on a bunch of steps and camp out for about 20mins and enjoy the view.   Another plus about visiting the great wall at Mutianyu is there aren't that many tourists around which allowed us to soak in the atomosphoere and just relax.  As we head back to the cable car to start our descend back to our bus, everyone including the kids enjoyed this amazing experience.  A trip here is a must for everyone to see at least once in their lives.  As the bus heads back to Beijing we are exhausted and the kids immediately fall asleep as Zinije and I enjoy the peacfully bus ride back to the city.
