The word volunteering is used for a range of
activities such as community service, citizenship, public service,
community action, community involvement, and trustee.

To some people it is an act of kindness; to others it is a means of
achieving a personal goal or putting something back into society. There
are also other benefits such as gaining new skills and improving job
prospects. Volunteers come from all walks of life and are active in almost every aspect of
society that you can think of - from visiting elderly people, to
coaching young athletes or even governing local schools; all of these
people work tirelessly towards helping society.

Volunteering
opens up a world of possibilities - and volunteers can and do almost
everything! This includes informal volunteering such as friendly
support within neighborhoods and community groups. It also includes
acts of good citizenship such as spontaneous community response to
emergency situations, community service and membership of community
groups. Self-worth, great fun, friendships, and job opportunities can all be part of getting involved with your community.

Volunteering may be an outlet for your natural talents, a road test for your new
career, or simply a handy way to meet new friends. Your strong beliefs
and values have inspired you to volunteer, so don’t fall at the first
hurdle. Volunteering, although sometimes difficult and frustrating, is one
of the most rewarding activities you can fill you time with.
