Hello from Singapore! After a couple of weeks at home in the UK sorting out the house and saying goodbye to family and friends, I have finally made it to Singapore. First impressions: hot, hot, hot and just a little humid too. Fortunately the place we are staying for a month has a great pool for cooling off.
Have spent the first few days apartment hunting and exploring the island. We have found a great place; brand new, close to the action with 2 swimming pools, gym, tennis court, BBQ area and fab balcony with great views over the city. Check it out: http://www.singaporeexpats.com/singapore-property-pictures/c ondo/visioncrest-residence.htm It has 2 bedrooms for those planning to pay us a visit!
August 9th was Singapore National Day, celebrating the 42nd 'birthday' ie 42 yrs since independence. We spent the evening watching the fireworks and air displays from a great bar on Clarke Quay. During happy hour(s) a jug of beer is around £6 otherwise alcohol is pretty expensive.
Have also been exploring on our bikes with Natalie (Simon's colleague) and Simon (her boyfriend). We cycled up to and around a nature reserve and resevoir- it was pretty hot work but worth the effort. We wondered why we were getting evil stares from some people as we cycled round the trail until we saw a tiny 'no cycling' sign! Oops. Cycling in the city is a little perilous to say the least. Crossing 6 lane highways is also a little interesting. Fortunately there are lots of pavements so will be sticking to those in the city! Am sure that's against the law too so will likely be told off sooner or later.
The Singaporians are very law abiding and there are strict fines for littering, dropping gum and other such offences. I had my first experience of breaking the rules by getting on a bus in the middle. Apparently you are supposed to only get on at the front and I suffered a 2 minute lecture from the driving for my sins!
I've uploaded some photos of Singapore- not too exciting but will give you some initial impressions of the city. I'm off to Vietman on Friday, so will no doubt have lots to share when I come back.
