It is just after midnight. The smell of the house brings a flood of memories. Ten years ago I was here. Ten years! I can't believe it's been so long. Fred is as warm as ever, calling me "Sunshine," still acting like a father to me. We spent hours at the kitchen table, drinking tea, looking through photo albums. Peter's room is exactly as it was ten years ago, the same posters of punk rock bands, the same flyers for shows we went to together, the same stacks of comics and photos and books on movie making. His sister Kit visited, and she is sweet and humorous, and I am glad to see her. I am "one of the family," Fred says, "and always will be."
I spoke with Peter on the phone about meeting in Copenhagen. He has only a few days before he leaves to the US. We hadn't spoken in years, but it was an easy conversation, a rare thing after so long a time, and via telephone. I feel buoyant, so lucky that I know such people.
How lucky am I?
A letter from Sarah Riordan reached me here, which added to the feeling. She is a lighthouse of a girl, radiating goodness. I need to write to all the ones I love and tell them how much I appreciate them.
