Had another day at the hospital yesterday. It wasn't quite so overwhelming as the first day. Still saw some crazy stuff that would never be done at home. The midwives and nurses were a bit more accepting of me and are starting to offer experiences to me.

Spent the rest of Thursday afternoon in town with Kaitlin, found the 'pants man' as the other girls in the house call him. In the old traditional market where the locals shop is a man with an amazing array of fabrics and saris. He will make any type of clothing you want. I got two shirts made out of the most beautiful silk. While the quality of the work is not great, for the $5 that we paid for them they are perfect just to throw on.

Had a lovely dinner together in the house - just to four girls now as one left the day before. We are starting to get to know each other a bit better and conversations are flowing a bit easier. One of the girls is Sri Lankan (though born and lives in the UK) but has family here. She was telling us about the civil war between the Tamils and the Sinhalese and how terrible it was. Her family are Tamil and she said they were lucky to escape at the beginning of the war. It is pretty much unspoken about now that it is over.

We had an early start on Friday morning. Three of us got the 6.15am train into Colombo and then onto Galle down on the south-west coast. It is a beautiful fort town build in the 1600's by the Portuguese and Dutch and then finally the British. We are staying at a beautiful hotel, which is really cheap by our standards for the quality. Of to the beach and maybe watch a cricket game (Sri Lanka v New Zealand) and some more sightseeing. Another early start on Sunday to head back to the house.

Sylvia on

I finished work early today and jonathon is in Sydney for work so clicked onto your blog. I couldn't stop reading it until I got to the end!

You are truly a great writer and photographer. Not to mention the great computer skills of uploading it all into the blog!!!!!

What impresses me the most is your openness to experience what Sri Lanka as a culture has to offer, as well as your journey as a Midwife in a local hospital. This is an experience you will not forget, as you submerged yourself in a culture other than your own and allow all your sensory perceptions to be alive. your emotions, your visuals, your auditory, and olfactory senses open up and without prejudice, as you make sense of that which wouldn't be fathonable in the wards of Melbourne.

Enjoy Athena. You so deserve it. And please keep up recording your experiences so that those that love you from far away can share a small window of opportunity to be there with you.
