Where I stayed
Van Der Valk Hotel Brugge-Oostkamp
Lady TT (the TomTom GPS) has done well so far, she is briefed one more time and we head for the Hotel near Brugge. The family have told me the correct pronunciation which I have practiced. Brew-with a guttural-g-erh.
Derek decides he wants to detour to Brussels. He wants a photo of something (!) in Brussels. So Lady TT is given our destination — the Centre of Brussels — all is well until we arrive in the city itself. Then the stress starts, Derek keeps asking me where we are going and where he should go, I keep telling him we are not going anywhere, just to the centre of Brussels and Lady TT keeps giving her instructions — to the centre of Brussels, nowhere really
We will stay (two nights) outside of Brugge because a) it is cheaper, b) they have a lift and c) the parking is free, which makes it at least €15 cheaper again. The Hotel is modern and big, not far from the freeway, so the balcony will be decorative only. We decide to see go to Brugge this afternoon and evening and use tomorrow to go to Fromelles.
Drive to the station and park, free bus into town and then on foot. We are getting used to and mostly enjoying, the walking. Our feet and my back are managing and it is a great way to see things up close. Derek finds another million places to photograph and I find a chocolate shop. Wonder if I can keep any for taking home? Now there’s a challenge.
Dinner we decide should be in the marketplace, we turn the corner and there is the most magnificent Town Hall. So many places to choose from, with tables inside and out. The evening is warm and mild, so outside is our choice. Derek heads off for more photo-taking and it is my choice, not necessarily a good thing because I like to good food I didn’t cook. The place we ate is to the right of the screen on this webcam http://www.comitevoorinitiatief.be/webcam/ you can’t see much of the restaurant, but you get an idea of the surroundings. The food was great, local, rich and kept me awake.
