Eventually, our flight was called at we made our way -- our long way -- past the duty free shops and the waiting areas decorated like oases at twilight (sand-colored carpets with wave patterns, tall palms in rows, lights above the trees like evening stars) to our gate. The flight was almost completely full. Paul and I had two side seats, bulkhead rows, in Business; Kyla had the first bulkhead in economy.
We took off right on time. I declined dinner but accepted a glass of wine … and then slept until we were over Iceland eight hours later. Landed on time in DC; long line at Immigration: our flight was boarding when we got to the gate. Pouring rain when we arrived in SFO. My bag didn't make it; United will deliver it to me tonight. Managed to make it home, despite the terrible weather. Gruden greeted us with whimpering.
