Izmir, Turkey

The first thing the one sees when leaving the ship is the absolute pride the people take in Turkey, their flag and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic and its first President, stands as a towering figure. There are flags and images everywhere.  The city is clean and well laid out.

Again, we opted for the hop on, hop off.  We made the complete tour and, during the tour, we found a starting point for a walking tour.  And walk we did.  We found some beautiful places, up close and personal.  One thing we found was a Sunday market.  Now there are crowds and there are CROWDS.  There is such a thing as a comfort zone and there are such things a being WAY OUT OF THE COMFORT ONE.  This market, while having many nice items for sale was way too crowded and put myself and Matt way out of any comfort zone. Carmen and Yo would have continued shopping.  Of note though, we never had an incident where someone was impolite nor were we in fear of our safety.  What was wrong is we couldn't stop if we wanted to as it was a solid mass of bodies.

Once we extricated ourselves, we went to find somewhere to eat and have wine.  I know no surprise there.  We did find a small restaurant and had a great lunch.  We walked more and decided to sample Turkish coffee.  Found a place to people watch and relax.  Good coffee, good wine, yes more wine and Matt found a friend.  A beautiful tri-color cat decided Matt looked nice and jumped up on his lap.  We jumped back on the bus back to the port.
