We are on the first leg, 9 hours, of the trip. Arrived in Madrid via Iberia Airlines, early this morning to a beautiful sunrise. An omen of things to come? The airport is massive but well laid out. We found a 24 hours secure locker facility to leave our carry-on luggage. Expensive but worth it.
Since we had 16 hours we decided to make the most of it. With the train running to the airport we had access to the entire city. The train and the stations were clean and well maintained. Great transportation.
We got off the train as close to the center of the city as we could get. From here we walked around in awe of the beautiful architecture. The old blended so nicely with the new. We visited a beautiful park, El Retiro, and decided to just relax here after the long flight.
We did ask some gentlemen in the park for a recommendation for dinner and they steered us to a restaurant about two blocks away. The food was delicious as was the service. Unfortunately we lost the name.
Back to the airport, security and back to waiting. Our flight was schedule to depart at 1:00 AM and it was right on time. All aboard for the next 10 1/2 hour leg to Johannesburg, SA.
