Sat 1st August

Went to Great Keppel Island. Clear blue skies, 26deg with a light breeze – postcard picture perfect.

Headed over on the Fast Cat Ferry, with some humorous cabin crew (who obviously thought they were funnier than they actually were) but made for a great trip over. On arrival we headed onto a glass bottom boat for a 1hour trip of the Great Barrier Reef, it was magnificent. The water was so clear and the sun was streaming in so we could see lots of the colors and fish really clearly. We saw heaps of fish, coral, sea snakes, stingrays and even a turtle. It was amazing, even got to feed some huge trevally (would have been nice on the BBQ - if they weren't in a protected area). Toby & Kylie then had a snorkel off the beach, which was beautiful, the water was warm and crystal clear. The beaches at Great Keppel are some of the best I have ever seen, like a postcard.

We were surprised at how few people were actually there. The resort closed down about 2 years ago (there is some politics about getting it open again) but that meant that we pretty much had a beach to ourselves. We barely saw anyone the whole time we were there.

We did however see a lot of cheeky birds, we had lorikeets randomly land on Adam’s knee and Lily’s head at the beach. Then we left our bags to go for a short wander only to come back to find a crow had unzipped our backpack and taken out some of its contents – how sneaky is that – thankfully all he got away with was a empty chip packet.

When we got back we had a caravan park BBQ (a free one – awesome) it even came with entertainment. Their very own residents "Larry & Jean" provided us with some hits from the 50s and 60s; it was well enjoyed by the grey nomads.
