ad: after a few pretty busy and fun filled days, we had a bit of a relaxer, waiting until the afternoon to pick up our hire car for the trip to milford sound the next day. we got the car, an absolute dream of a silver toyota platz, or simply 'the silver bullet'!!

we thought as we had it an afternoon early we went on a site seeing trip, we drove 45 mins to a place called glenorchy, which is where alot of the lord of the rings films were shot, but since the weather was terrible there wasnt much to see, plenty of photos of mist and rain!!!

so the next day we were up at 6 to drive the 5 hours to milford sound, hoping for some good weather!! those who dont know, milford sound is in the fjiordlands, basically where the mountains on the coast had glaciers many years ago, as the glaciers moved they created these massive valleys and lakes, which open out onto the tasman sea, all making for some spectacular scenery!!

rob took the early shift driving, and having finally found some straight roads, decided to see what the silver bullet could do!! clearly this turned out to be a bit of an error. we wont reveal the true abilities of the bullet, but after a while... yes you guessed it, flashing lights appeared in the rear view mirror!! apparently 137 km/h is a little over the 100km/h limit!! rob just managed to get away without any points or confiscation of his license but did get lumbered with a rather hefty 400 dollar fine!!
after that the driving became a little more conservative!!

well we carried on and came across many amazing places to stop and get a photo, the mirror lakes, the chasm, many huge waterfalls and river rapids, then through a mountain via the homer tunnel.

we finally reached milford sound on time, got on our 2 hour boat cruise, positioned ourselves right at the front of the boat (in ginger bird from titanic style), and viewed some incredible surroundings!! we went out through the fjiord, between the mountains, under the waterfalls, sometimes going a little too close to the rocks as the driver seemed to fancy himself as a bit of a maverick!! we went out onto the tasman sea and around the coast where all of a sudden there were massive swells and waves and it all got a bit more fun!! but this was on a perfect day with hardly any wind, apparently the wind gets up to 200km/h, that would definately be an interesting boat trip!!

just as we were going back into the inlet we saw a 'pod' of freshwater bottle nose dolphins, swimming along side the boat on the coast, it was pretty spectacular but very hard to take a photo as u didnt know when they would surface, but brilliant all the same.

then made our way back, via some more huge waterfalls and a load of seals (the animals not the crack commando unit).

then back to queenstown via some more beautiful scenery as throughout the day the weather had brightened up and by lunch it was perfect.

we then went for our meal at the prime restaurant, which despite being very swanky and having excellent food, was fairly cheap. following mine and rob's new year resolution of not drinking for a week which we completed (jim coming agonizingly close but having 2 nights on the beer!!), we also wanted to have a proper new zealand lamb dinner, and it was so good, definately the best meal while we have been away.

then it was off for some more beer as we had found a very cheap bar and were given a lot of free drinks vouchers. as it was our last nite together until melbourne we got leathered, as rob left me and jim this morning to make his way to sydney to meet mommy and daddy hayes. a big shout out to mr and mrs hayes, who will soon be travellers number five and six respectively, welcome aboard!!!

stay tuned t po fans, more extreme fun lies ahead!!!
