Essen is the Culture Capital of Europe for 2010 so Dan and I decided to go in for a day trip.
Very disappointed. The info centre didn't have any STREET MAPS let alone specific things to do or see. We got on a tram following an artists impression of a map (ie, out of scale, no street names etc) to Zollverein (sp?), an old steel mill. The inside had been turned into a bunch of museums and galleries and such, but we were up for more 'cultural' stuff than that (from what I gathered it wasn't just german-specific) and so got back on the tram to the altstadt (old town) where the houses are older and the streets are cobbled. Dan wanted some authentic schnitzel but we ended up at Vapiano, an awesome italian restaurant - the same I went to with Max (diff city tho of course). After that we just headed back as Dan was meeting friends in Cologne for dinner. So much for the cultural capital!
