Where I stayed
This morning we start at the Recoleta Cemetry, where Eva Peron is buried, it looks like a place only for the wealthy, the tombs are very extravagant, some can only be described as buildings in their own right, many generals, presidents etc entombed here, Eva's tomb is not as grandiose as some others, there is a long story behind it which I won't bore you with, its pretty busy around it cos most people go straight there, especially tour groups
There is a sunday market outside which we meander through, nothing particularly exciting
The thing about BA is that its all about impressive museums and art galleries, which I honestly couldn't be bothered about, besides Rio its the only major city we are spending time in, when we leave here city time is over
That said there was one really good reason for being here, the city is renowned for the tango, we have spent some time researching the issue, and have levelled it down to 2 options, Carlos Gardel and Piazzolla
At some stage we stroll past an information counter, where two ladies explain the two to us, both are extremely high class, one is traditional tango (40's) and one is more modern tango (60īs) - we chose traditional, Carlos Gardel
The show includes dinner and drinks, the price in pesos is worth a choke, but in pounds is similar to a show in the west end
It is supposed to include a hotel pick-up, but Hostel Soho doesn't cut the grade, we will have to get ourselves there
Judging by the pics it looks smart, so I break out the jeans I have been carting around for a rainy day and haven't worn since the flight from London (Note - don't bring jeans here, don't know what I was thinking), shoes are a problem, only have merrell hikers and slops, slops win, syl has a dress she bought the day before, also slops, no high heels for her!
The taxi there is about 15 min and costs 1 pound 10 pence, taxis here are dirt cheap, we step out into.....the fashion parade of the century, chicks in cocktail dresses and high heels, okes in their number ones, us in slops, luckily for me I find it highly amusing otherwise I may have felt a little self conscious...
The venue is outrageously smart, we get a table right near the front, the 3 course meal is the best, wine is great, and the show is too good for words
The moves they pull are breathtaking, the music, the costumes, the passion, I have never seen people move that fast in such cohesion
We have experienced the tango, how does it compare to the Phantom of the Opera in London or the Moulin Rouge in Paris, I would say too close to call, see them all and you decide
Would I go if I was on a tighter budget or if I was travelling for longer than 2 months, probably not, there are other shows out there that are more budget friendly
Tomorrow we have a free day cos we have squeezed in what we wanted to do into the first two days, from now on it hots up a bit, so maybe one last chilled day is in order
