What I did
Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysees, Louvre
July 1. Day 6 is Canada Day, which means absolutely nothing in France. Everyone got a roll and a croissant at breakfast, and then their choice of cereal, yogurt, and jams. It was missing some cold cuts, but I think our experiences in Belgium and the Netherlands has made us a little spoiled.
We had a long day ahead of us in Paris, so we headed out again to meet our tour guide, Santrine. While our bus - with new bus driver Jean, who speaks very little, if any, English – drove us around to the different landmarks in Paris, Santrine explained some of the history behind them. She teased us with the Eiffel Tower, which we'll get to explore tomorrow. We went to the Arc de Triomphe, drove through the Champs Elysee, and did a little shopping before heading to lunch.
We ate at a place called Flam’s, which served some really delicious pizza on flat bread. Afterwards, we went to the Louvre, where we broke off into 5 groups on a scavenger hunt of sorts, searching for, and learning about, 6 different pieces. We saw the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the Mona Lisa (also known as La Jaconde in France), Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, Apollo’s Gallery, and The Consecration of Emperor Napoleon and the Coronation of Empress Josephine. We must have made a wrong turn somewhere though, as we were unable to find the Venus de Milo. L It was for the best however, as we were running late to our next destination.
Our last stop before dinner was Montmartre, where we saw the Basilique du Sacre-Coeur, a church that stands on a hill and overlooks Paris. The view was breathtaking. Before meeting up with the bus, students also managed to get souvenirs for loved ones back home.
Then we were off to dinner, where the students knew we would be eating frog legs and escargot. The pictures speak for themselves, but the students should be commended for trying both appetizers, even when they weren’t to their taste.
Then it was back to the hotel, and the students spent our last night here playing foosball, table tennis, and ultimate Frisbee. We saw the sun set around 10 p.m., and headed off to bed. Tomorrow, we’re going to the Eiffel Tower!
