Its lashing rain in Miami today, very little sunshine in the "Sunshine State" so far!! Nonetheless, we head in the direction of Gator Park in the Everglades National State Park, (park is 8 million acres) where we take an air boat along the canals and through the swamps in a vain search for alligators. As its just the two of us, our guide speeds along the canals, weaving around the hammocks (indian name for island) but its pouring too heavy to spot the alligators.

Back at the reception, we enjoy a gator show (a man wrestling a giant alligator) and even get to hold one gator in our hands. We learn that alligators live between 60-80 years in the wild. Gator park is the only ecosystem in the world where alligators and crocodiles co-exist side by side. Although alligators only thrive in fresh water, because they can't digest salt, crocodiles can live in both fresh and salty water. The Everglades is unique because the fresh water in the Florida bay meets the salt water of the Gulf of Mexico.

Afterwards, we drive northbound to Fort Lauderdale, to Sawgrass Mills gigantic shopping centre. Fergus goes on a mad spending spree...... sunglasses and camcorders are the order of the day!!

We return to our hotel for a quick shower and change before our black limo pulls up and whisks us off to South Beach, Miami for our Italian dinner (the whole tour, limo and dinner, cost $30 each). We have a lovely steak meal (which inevitably ends up costing more than we expected!!) before taking to the main boulevard near the beach. We are not admitted to pubs as Ad forgot ID, so we must stick to restaurants. We go to Gloria Estifans "Bongos Cuban Cafe" for a couple of drinks. Its a really cool little restaurant with entertaining foyer in the front where people are salsa dancing to the live band. Our return limo driver takes us on a detour route home, great fun!
