So we managed to to pack up our car inside and out along with our cute cat, Mochi. It was like playing legos. The day before leaving we shipped 22 boxes (715lbs) of household goods on Amtrak for only $415! We left all our furniture behind for our subletter (my friend Teale who went with me to Vietnam - see travel blog). Yes, we are keeping our apartment in Brooklyn folks. I intend to move back to Brooklyn. This is not a permanent thing!! I'm an east coast girl all the way so I'm sad to leave! But such is life. New adventures, new frontiers, yadda yadda yadda...
I was trying to leave early in the AM to avoid the West Indian Parade festivities that were to take place in our neighborhood that day. You could sense the party waiting to happen in our Caribbean neighborhood with people walking around holding their feathered costumes and steel drums lined up on parade platforms waiting to go. Sounds like a fun parade but it would not be good if you are trying to drive out of town. We had to load up the car before they closed down our street. We packed in delirium with no sleep but didn't get out till really late in the day!!
I thought that when were going to leave NYC, it was going to be this really clear heartfelt moment where I was going to be like, "This is it. This is it. We are leaving. We are out of here. Here we go." But honestly, I was in such a daze that it just felt like a really mundane act to drive out of the city. No biggie.
We drove to my Mom's house to bid her farewell along with my dear high school friends, Karri, Terri, and Rich. I spoke with my Dad who was helping me take care of the logistics to see my family in Tennessee, whom I haven't seen in 12 years. Said farewell to my brother on the phone and grandmother who were out of town in New Orleans. I kind of felt like I was leaving for college again when I was saying goodbye. I guess going to the west coast is a big life change like going away to college for the first time? I don't know. But again, I think I was too tired from driving and lack sleep to really absorb the moment.
