Day 34 & 35
Portland, OR

Portland was the last stop on the trip with a serious job possibility. And that was the first thing on the agenda. I got up and out the door to meet my friend Nathan. I knew Nathan from Taylor, we lived on the same floor together. He works for a rescue mission here. Homelessness is a big deal here in Portland. I mean we have seen a fair amount of homeless people along our trip, but when we started to get in proximity to Portland we saw them everywhere. Many people were even trying to hitchhike here from CA when we were in the redwoods. The mission has a video position they're talking about creating. It's pretty much a storytellers position. They want to capture stories of life change and help people better understand the homeless community. When Adeana and I were considering NYC so closely we gave a lot of thought to being involved in a homeless ministry. So, when I heard about the position we had to come and see. I got a tour of two facilities and talked to a number of people here and I gotta say I was pretty impressed. It's a good group of people, very knowledgable and down to earth. Moving here would be such an opportunity to learn about how to better relate and help combat homelessness. It's all still kind of preliminary, but the interview went well. We gotta pray about it and put it up on the wall with the other possiblities and see where God is leading. While I was doing the interview Ethan and Adeana got a lot of pool time and got rested up a bit. The next day I did a lot of neighborhood shopping to see what looks interesting. It's a fairly residential town outside of downtown, so we're not sure where we'd live here. You can live downtown, but the prices are higher. And that hasn't fazed us too much other places, but I wouldn't be making the same at a non-profit as I would in a production job, so we'll have to see. In the afternoon, Ethan and Adeana joined me downtown to take a look. After that we headed over to Nathan and Lisa's for dinner. They made us real food! It was nice to sit at a table and eat some homemade food with friends. And the food was pretty tasty too! One last stop, we wanted to hit a well known local church. If we're going to move here we'd like to find a church as well. They were having Good Friday services so it worked out. It was an ok service, but a little different than what I'm used to. I mean actually the elements were well performed, it just didn't seem cohesive. I'm still not sure what they were trying to convey about the death of Jesus, but it was artsy. This is what happens after you've worked in church production this long :-) But, after what we saw at a few other churches along the way we know there are options out there that are very different from KCC, but still great churches. So, if we move here I think we'll keep looking. Sorry no pix for these days. I was so busy looking around I forgot to take any.
