Day 15

It's good to be back on the road. We got the call from the transmission place this morning and everything is all set. My wallet is hurting pretty bad, but my spirits are much higher. It took us a little while to get the van repacked after settling into the hotel for a few days, but then after Adeana insisted we stop by Chick-fil-a one more time (we ate there three times in Amarillo, she loves that place in case you couldn't tell) we were finally on the road. Right as were heading out of town we saw a bunch people hanging around the side of the road, Adeana thought maybe it was combine races, which doesn't seem out of place in Amarillo, but in fact it was the Cadillac Ranch, which was the ONE thing we had planned on seeing in Amarillo, so we figured we better stop and check it out. Graffiti is encouraged, but we didn't have a spare can of spray paint sitting around, I did think about dousing it with some leftover transmission fluid, but we just decided to just take it in and move on.
Because of the extra days waiting for the transmission fix our original schedule was pretty much shot. We're pretty sure we'd still like to be in San Diego by next Sunday, so that gives us a lot of days in the middle to take in the sites. So, we poked along the Route 66 roads a bit more taking in the sites in New Mexico. Tacumcari, NM is another very cool city locked in time. I wish we could have seen it at night. It looks like it's all neon. From there we popped up to Las Vegas, NM. Not quite the same as the one in Nevada. But still, a very cool old town. We stopped off briefly at the ice cream shop in the drugstore there and then got back on the road. Originally we were going to go to Albuquerque, but a lot of the old Route 66 maps have you going through Santa Fe. I've never been to Santa Fe and from what we can tell it looks like a really interesting city, so we all decided what the heck, let's go check it out. The drive was absolutely beautiful. We had to stop and take pictures a couple times. I could have stopped many more, but we wanted to get into town to eat dinner. We decided to hit Maria's. It was some of the best food we've had on the trip. I got a very interesting chicken dish, which I have to admit didn't do much for me, but Adeana got Chili Rellenos and Ethan got these ribs...they were both fantastic! We're were stuffed and beat after that so we headed for the hotel. We'll see what Santa Fe has to offer tomorrow.
