Arrived early into Medan and rather than argue to much over the price ofa cab got a ticket from a counter though Im sure I could have gotten a cheaper ticket if I had walked away from the main building.

Driver got me to RM Raja but not the hotel I wanted. The place I got dropped off was the cheapest option in my book so decided to take it. Plans at this point in time was to just stay on Sumatra for 3 or so weeks with the hope of getting at least a couple of weeks without to much rain. So far so good.

Read that if people were to name the worst town they had visited this would be it. Personally didnt think the place was any worse then many other places I have been. After dropping my bag off decided to just wander around the streets of town since the city has no real sights for tourists to visit. Only thing of any real interest was the mosque that was just down the road. Didnt try going inside since its nearing the end of Ramadan and the place was busy.

While walking around found that I seemed to be the only one. Guessing that its because roadside are narrow or non-existent, its hot and humid, and traffic is crazy. Seems that most people either take the mini buses that run along fixed routes or pay for a bivouc. These are basically motor bikes with carriage attached to the side. Guessing that the nice thing about these are that you can take the carriage off when you dont need it and use the bike just as a bike.

Didnt pay to much attention to the roads and basically just tried to keep the number of turns down. While a lot of the town had concrete building I found that along the river the buildings were more down trodden and made of wood and tin sheets.

Kept wandering the streets sweating it out and getting lots of offers for rides. At one point wandered past a whole bunch of firework shops which I am guessing is selling stuff for the end of Ramadan. At one point during my wandering I ended up getting a bit lost and had to backtrack. Seems that I had wandered further than I had thought and wandered off my map. Not to hard though to retrace my steps.

Was hungry by now so wandered into a small cafe where I had a piece of fried chiken and noodels for less than a dollar.

While wandering back I eventually made it into the city center which had some interesting older buildings and a hell of a lot of traffic.  Headed back to the hostel from here and even though I couldnt find the owner managed to find my way to a room. Basically a small wodden box with a door and no bathroom so am guessing the room is cheaper then the one I was originally offered with a bathroom.

Crashed for a bit then decided to head out towards the mosque. Found that the street next to it was full of food vendors and stalls selling various goods. Am guessing that all this stuff is here due to it being the end of Ramadan.

Earlier in the day had visited the tourist office near the hostel to look at shuttles. Hadnt come across any internet cafes during the day but found the hostel just down the road from mine had Wifi. Once  again the laptop was coming in useful. All I needed to do was buy a beer to access the Wifi.

Chased up some uni stuff and looked at flights while drinking my beer and thinking about where to head off first. While here found that the hostel offered a tour to trek with the orangutans in Bikut Lawang. Had decided to not do the diving first since the dive shop was closed from 28th Aug til 2nd Sep so this seemed a good option. The tour included transport and one night accomodation of top of the 2 day trek for the same price that listed in my book for just the trek.

called it a night once my baterry started to go flat and was kept up by the couple in the next room watching the football (soccar). Guess thats what you get with paper thin walls. In the end didnt get to bed till 1am. At least thats what I thought but in actual fact it was 12am since I had forgotten to change my watch.
