Floating and Hiking

For my beautiful fiancÚ Shalynn's birthday we had an equally beautiful camping trip up at Clear Lake. The warm weather made a float on the near-freezing waters of Clear Lake – the source of the McKenzie River and Shay’s middle name – an absolute indulgence with dazzling displays of the turquoise and bright green reflections of viney maple contrasting the deep, hazy green of the surrounding evergreens. We sat in the sun contemplating her 23 years and goals for until she reaches 24. Being such a nice day we shared the lake and so the sounds of the usual fisherman’s bluffs mingled across the water with the splash of an osprey actually catching a fish. We crept up to a grebe on a log and found some Spring Azures Butterflies basking as well before the sun hid behind a cloud and we realized that the summer fašade was really an Oregon June at 3000 feet and so we headed for our campfire.

We woke up Saturday to the soft sound of raindrops on our rain-fly. Oh shoot. Well lucky for us the downpour never peaked and we hiked along the McKenzie River Trail – the number one bike trail in the nation – to a drizzly overcast that made all the moss glow and glisten. With our friends Dylan and Bre leading the way jumping on seesaw logs and contemplating lichen, we hiked to Sahalie Falls and on to Koosah Falls on a wet, short expedition that must have been one of the most beautiful hikes of my life.
