The animals on the islands are totally unique. Thats an understatement really, its bewildering how they have evolved to be so unafraid of man. ALL the animals seem to view humans just as other animals, that are to be mostly ignored and occassionaly reminded of their place. Its funny to see a seal ´seeing off´a tourist whos stood too close :) after 8 days unfortunately we've become a little hard to impress, the first baby seal certainly gets more photos taken than the last :)
We had a fixed itinerary of island we were going to visit
Baltra, Bachas, Plazas, Santa fe, espanola, punta suarz, Gardner bay, floreana, punta cormorant, post office bay, Santa crus, Charles Darwin research station ( where lonesome George lives, the last known tortoise of his kind), highland, rabida, Chinese hat, bartolome, Sullivan bay, north Seymour...not bad for 8 days eh ? :)
the highlights were, in no order of preference,:
snorkeling with turtles, sharks, penguins (yes tropical penguins) rays, seals, iguanas, millions of fish,
standing RIGHT next to: baby seals (ahhh....CUTE !), baby birds like albatross, boobies (steady now ), frigates, swallow tailed gulls, pelicans, finches everywhere, mockingbirds coming down and sitting on you ( probably wondering if they're going to be given something, there is a history of tourists feeding the wildlife :( seals crashing through a group of tourists lying in the wrong place on the beach, the islands are still active volcanoes so we've seen the largest lava flow in the world (apparently, we couldn't see it all so we have to take his word on it )
Its an amazing place, were so glad we went, inspite of the ridiculous fees to get there. Obviously most people will never have the opportunity to visit the islands, its stupidly expensive from the UK, so i wont say ´you should go´, we feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to be here. It is without doubt, the highlight of south America, even better than machu picchu!
Adam here, well gail really has covered basically all there is to say. I am just typing so that I have at least said something :) Its a fantastic place and the first place I could have easily stayed longer in.Which is unfortunate as its the first place that we couldn't stay longer in , isn't that how things always are ???
