Ayutthaya may not have been the first capital of Thailand, but it is the most interesting to us. We'll reserve the history lesson for only those who are interested, however.

Whereas modern-day New Sukkhothai is separated by the "old town" (where the ruins are located) and the "new town" (where the modern city has sprung), in Ayutthaya there are no divisions between old and new.

Ramshackle houses with tin roofs sit next to ramshackle ruins from 500 years ago. Of course the tin roof houses are not protected as UNESCO World Heritage sites, as the Ayutthaya ruins are.

The town is small and compact, not really much to do aside from walking the streets and taking in the atmosphere and breathing in the history.

Enjoy the photos and videos!
