I was, as any 15-year-old going to Europe for a month would be, giddy out of my mind. I was fidgety and bouncy and smiled at lots of people. My mom, who was accompanying me on my trip, reflected my bright mood. One morose ticket-checker guy asked us why we were so happy.

After the usual rigamarole of airplane travel, we were up in the air and on our way to Amsterdam. We had a two hour layover there before we went to Milan, Italy. The eight-hour plane ride took the fizz out of me similar to the way leaving a bottle of soda open for too long takes the fizz out of it. I spent most of my time reading Eat Pray Love over my mom's shoulder and watching the movies the people in front of me bought through the space between the seats (our seats had these spiffy little TV screens installed in them that you could buy and watch movies on. If I leaned a bit to the left, I could watch the movie of the guy in front of me, albeit without sound)

And then, after that ungodly wait, we arrived in Amsterdam.
