I begrudgingly got into Carlos' taxi - for those who are unaware, all Peruvian horror stories take place in taxis. But I am here at Loki Hostel, so everything turned out alright.

It's been a while since I have stayed in a hostel, however, Loki looks nice at a first glance. Tonight I am looking to get some sleep after the long flight, but this is most definitely a party place. The music has already started from the bar and it isn't even 9PM. My room is actually quite impressive, given my expectations at least. The ensuite bathroom is a plus and I am on the lower bunk which is always a good thing.

It's difficult to describe Lima, partly because the thick smog covers the entire city. As Carlos navigated through the crazy Lima traffic I got my first glimpse of Peru through the window. The city is lit by the headlights, and it's quite clear that this place is just like any other city in the developing world. Inequality is widespread; amidst the high rise buildings and run down apartments, it's quite clear that the road from the airport to Miraflores was once quite different. Hugging the Pacific Coast throughout, I can't help but think that the rapid development is 'damaging' the city.

City aside, I can't say I am not nervous. There is a certain sense of adventure with travelling, but this is the first time I have left the country alone, and certainly the longest time away from home. Unfortunately, I won't be here long enough to settle in, or to see Lima properly, as tomorrow I am catching a morning bus to Huaraz in the north.
