It was 2:41 pm and my flight was just moments from landing.  The tarmac whizzed by, while - ironically - the plane felt temporarily motionless above it.  I nervously glanced at the boarding pass for my connecting flight information:

Delta Flight 6522
Boarding Time:  2:35 pm
Departure Time:  3:15 pm
Departure Gate:  Please check upon arrival

Would I make it?  If not, would there be another flight today available to PHL?

The moment the wheels touched the ground, I pressed the on-switch to my cellphone.  The plane slowed and then meandered its way to the gate.  If two turbofan jet engines push out enough force to rocket this thing to 500 miles per hour in the air, how was it possible that we're going only 10 mph during taxi?  I watched new emails appear on my cellphone's screen.  One was from Delta:  Notification - flight 6522 - gate change - now departing from gate C34.  Flight on time.  I grabbed the issue of Delta Skyway from the seat's magazine pocket in front of me and found the airport map for the Detroit Metro Airport a few pages from the back cover.  I was arriving at concourse A.  Of all the gates at this airport, C34 was the farthest point away from me.

By the time the door to the plane opened, it was 2:52 pm.  Fortunately, I had an aisle seat near the front of the plane.  I shot out of the cabin and rushed up the gangway into the main terminal.  There was a sea of people and it took me a few moments to orient myself.  I had to find the middle of the concourse, take an escalator down, run through the pedestrian tunnel that crosses under the runway, take an escalator up, make a right, and run to the end of concourse C.  I was off!  I packed light and had only my backpack - laptop bag.  A little more than half-way there, someone backed into my path and I almost ran into her, but I was able to swerve at the last moment.  Unfortunately, the close call scared her and she gasped.  I don't know if she heard my apology.  At 3:04 pm, I reached the departure gate.  My phone vibrated with a message at the same time that I looked at the gate placard:  Flight 6522 delayed until 3:30 pm.

This was going to be an interesting trip....

Mom's right, you should really write some more. You are able to recreate and describe extremely stressful situations with such eloquence!
