Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka - A bus from Kandy to Anuradhapura took about five hours but the ride went quick with great company! We were heading to see the Ancient cities of Anuradhapura but were unaware how big the actual city was!! We are dropped off at the southern bus station and walked, walked and walked some more! We were heading for a cheap hostel but suddenly realised how small the scale was on my map, we had quite a walk to make!

After thirty minutes, a mini bus drives by, brakes, then turns around. He is a hotel owner and has kindly offered us a free lift to find a guesthouse. Sonja is not convinced but the guy proves who he is and tries to call a guesthouse for us. The first one he drives us too, is miles away and is too expensive. He drives us near to where he lives and finds a cheaper guesthouse! Perfect!! We'd have still been walking but now we were walking back to the old town to grab some food.

I'm still not quite convinced about the Sri Lankan curry. I order some rice and curry but am given a massive plate of rice and only a tiny piece of chicken in the middle and very little sauce. I ask for more sauce but it looks like I've said something in Swahili! Eventually they give me a little more sauce and I sit down. Sonja grabs the proper rice and curry. She orders tuna and her plate is filled with four other vegetable dishes. Ahhh, this is Sri Lankan curry! But, she asks for an egg, and this seems to confuse the server totally! She gets her egg after a surpervisor is asked???? The food was delicious and my extra sauce was super hot! Ouch!

That night we are chilling in our room under the mosquito net and I hear a cat calling from outside, so I call back and the cheeky monkey jumps into our window frame and climbs on in!! I chase him for a little, lift him by his arm pits to meet Sonja then kick him out! Two hours later when we finish on the internet, I walk to the bathroom to see the cat sat on a bathroom mat, enjoying a snooze!! Cheeky monkey!!

Next day, we take a tour of the Ancient city. It is supposed to cost a pretty heftly $25 each to get a ticket and we plan to hire a bicycle and see the sites. After we wake, it's over 35 degrees and too hot to walk let alone cycle so our guesthouse owner has a proposition for us!! Take a Tuk Tuk, don't pay an entrance fee but still see the sights?? We were a little confused but agreed to the deal and happily sat in the back of the Tuk Tuk enjoying the breeze on our faces!! We have a quick breakfast first and pick up some food and water supplies.

Our Tuk Tuk driver quickly nips home for his packed lunch and we are off exploring the Ancient city for the rest of the day. We saw various sites and enjoyed some hot temples in bare foot!! I was quickly hopping around to stop my feet burning. The sites were pretty cool to see, but the intense heat caused us to sit in the Tuk Tuk at some of the sites. We saw the following ....

It seems, to avoid any official seeing a ticket, we were driving through forests and heavy bushes that the Tuk Tuik driver knew. After about 5pm we were templed out and went back to the town for a ginger beer and paid our driver. That night I finally had a proper Sri Lankan curry and I also had my first proper shave in a very long time!!

The guesthouse was very relaxed, the nights were hot even with a fan so I would wake in a pool of sweat! We were to move again, before I had to head back to Colombo for my Indian visa. So, we will squeeze in one more ancient site!

Next stop, Sigiraya.
