Where I stayed
Hotel Chinatown 2
I arrived pretty late the first night so walked over towards time square where my favourite curry street vendor place is! You get a large plate of rice and spoon on as much sauce as you want! They also play movies, anything from the 6th day to avatar. Easy watching while sat on plastic seats enjoying a delicious curry!
New years eve day time was very low key for me and for good reason. I went to KLCC to see the Petronas towers. I had planned on going early, to get a free 'first come first served' ticket for the concourse, think back to Entrapment. However, some noisy pigs were sleeping behind the other curtains so I got up at 430am and caught the second half of Liverpool v Newcastle. The towers were pretty impressive it's just so weird how it's taken me four visits to finally see them! I checked our the mall near them as well, mainly for some welcome air-con.
In the afternoon, I pottered off to the same curry place for a late lunch, I didn't really want to eat before the new years party! So, on couchsurfing, I signed up to a pool party in the Bukit Bintang area of KL, the same posh area I stayed in during the summer of 2004. Bring your own booze and meet at an MRT station where someone would walk these homeless couchsurfers to the party.
I get to the MRT station and no sign of any CS. I check upstairs at the station then just stood near some stairs. I guess, being a bright shade of white, ginger hair and a stupid white tshirt saying 'I heart zorbing' helps make me stand our as a CS. Within a few minutes people were walking up to me asking about the CS party. I met a cool French couple first then a guy from Saudi Arabia who came out with this initial quote 'don't worry I don't have a bomb strapped to me'! He was pretty cool in the end! It wasn't the best location to meet and greet as a cell phone company were in the middle of a marketing campaign so I could feel my voice starting to go already! We waited longer than expected for our guide to the party and when we eventually started walking I chatted to a German/Scottish couple who normally reside in London but currently live in Japan.
The party was great!! Downstairs was a perfect pool, upstairs a large open area with a couple of tables and the beginning of a cock fest!! I think the ratio of male to female was ten to one, but I ended up chatting to a crazy Korean girl, a lad from Argentina who hasnt gone home in 8 years, a Swedish girl who was helping out at the party as she was surfing at the organisers place. I think it was at this point I met a really cool gut from Yemen who lives in Malaysia. We talked middle east politics for a while and chatted to a host of other people! Slowly, I went downhill, just before it hit midnight! At midnight, I could just see the peak of the petronas towers and there were fireworks all over!! It was definitely a fun way to spend new year, but I honestly prefer something more intimate with family and/or friends! The previous nye with Di, Josh, Ben and Jessica was perfect!
I did my usual disappearing act! I'm either bored or too drunk and know I need to head back! It should have been a twenty minute walk, after more than twenty minutes, I arrived at a river, this didn't seem right?? To my left, I recognized a LRT station and stumbled my way to my hotel. I sat on a sofa and checked the nye football scores! In my disappointment I fell asleep around 130am and woke up at 530 am with my itouch and phone still on my chest!! Seeing as none of my family had yet to see the new year in, I rang them in turn. Dave, mum, dad and Pete all enjoyed my drunken slur and good wishes for the new year.
New years day was a complete wash out! I made the sensible decision to spend one more night in KL. I ate twice at my curry place, slept loads and went to KLCC to watch the film 'The Darkest Hour'. It wasn't the best but was solely filmed in Moscow so I enjoyed seeing Moscow again. I did something bizarre before I watched the film, I head butted an ATM! The mall where the cinema was located is a walking nightmare. I like to walk fast and get to where I'm headed, but so many others are meandering around, suddenly stopping infront of me and getting on my nerves! I found an HSBC Amanah ATM and when I got some cash out, didn't see the plastic screen sticking out the side and walked straight into it!! I cracked my head right on the edge! Serves me right for getting irritable!! I did the usual check to see if I was bleeding! My forehead was pretty wet but it was only sweat! No, before you ask, the ATM was fine!!
I had an early bus for the Cameron highlands so I nipped next door for a cheap buffet breakfast and set off.
Next stop, Cameron Highlands.
