Hi again.
Well we had just left Cape Wet Sod…. owphies sorry I mean Cape Cod, and as if you couldn't tell it hasn't been the greatest couple of days. Sunday was passable we got to the Cape and drove all the way down to Provincetown expecting some beautiful views that never appeared. So we found a camp site… an extortionate campsite (to be honest they all where) that charged us $130 to stay for 2 nights. Now having paid that you would expect the nicest campsite ever, and it was very nice all in the dunes and the woods BUT they then had the nerve to charge you 25c for every 3 minutes in the shower!!! Anyways… we set up camp and took walked the 20 minutes or so into Provincetown along the side of quite a crazy highway, once we arrived in town and saw the $15+ parking charges we where glad that we took the walk along the highway! We poked around a bit in the insanely expensive shops dodging the showers before heading out of town and walking across the causeway to the light house at the end of the point. Luckily the rain held off for our walk and for most of the rest of the day. Provincetown was very pretty and kind of reminded me of Aldebrugh in the sence that it was pretty, expensive and popular with yuppie Yankee's. That night it rained… and rained… and rained. Thanks to the single WORST tent design in the world we soon found our selves in a pool. The crazy ass tent Ben brought from home had a ground sheet that you lay out on the floor and then put the inner of the tent on top of…. as it hadn't rained we hadn't discovered that this stupid design funnels all the water right into the tent. Needless to say I thought of my nice world jamboree tent that was shoved through a letter box in Cambridge somewhere and how good it was in comparison… and trust me its also a shockingly bad tent. Needless to say we then spent the night sleeping in the car…. $65 to sleep in the car, we could have done that for free at the side of the road! You have to laugh… we all have… if not we would be crying I'm sure!!!
Yesterday we therefore had to go about fixing the tent. Myself and Ben came up with the bright idea of buying 2 ground sheet type things one to tie to the trees and put over the tent as many other people at the campsite had done. With a second to put over the already wet floor inside of the tent. So then we drove 1 hour down the cape to the nearest Home Depot (kind of like B&Q) and discovered this was an expensive plan and would cost us at least $50. So at this point we came across the dilemma of weather to cut our losses and book into a cabin / motel and just hope we don't get more rain, to bodge the tent or to buy some cheap new tents. In the end we got 2 new 2 man tents from Kmart for $24 each. Oh and by the way it had been pouring all morning. Not really beach weather… so we spent our afternoon in the Mall across the road. I got some birthday presents for Ben because stuff is a lot cheaper out here than it is at home. After grabbing a snack it was STILL rainin so we opted to see a film in the cinema, the expendables, it was star strangled and pretty poor, but still it was a good rainy day activity. By the time we had driven back down the cape to our campsite it was dark and STILL raining so we put up our new tents and gave dinner the skip because no one wanted to cook in the rain.
This morning guess what it is STILL raining so we packed up own 2 new tents all wet and yucky and binned the old tent. So our overall group opinion of Cape Cod isn't great…. it is a) expensive b) wet and c) has nothing much to do in the rain. I personally think our perception would have been very different if the weather would have been good. We could have hired bikes and kykaks and surfed and walked and just have had fun. YES the camping still would have been expensive but I think the location in better weather would have made it worth while. Anyway now we are off to Rhode Island to look around there this afternoon, we are hoping to drive out of this miserable rain, then we are camping just outside of New York City this evening so we can head straight into the city tomorrow find our hostel and get sight seeing!!! Please hope that the weather picks up for our sight seeing in NYC!
All for now,
A slightly soggy Abi xxx
P.S. not very many pictures because we haven't really done that much!!!
