I've been far too busy/tired to update this the last few days but my last entry was made just before heading off down to Haad Rin beach for the Full Moon Party.
At that time I was feeling pretty energetic, but I was wavering a fair bit still from the night before and when it came to heading down the beach to Milky Bar Resort to join some more Irish girls Aoileann and Audrey had met previously I was feeling considerably worse for wear and regretting getting so hammered the night before and having such little sleep. I ordered the nicest Thai curry you could imagine, but I could only finish half of it. However I wasn't the only one, and the general consensus was that we needed a bit of a pick me up. Gradually however we got more up for it and met some blokes from England who were staying at the same resort. We hailed a couple of pick-up trucks and headed down to the beach at around 11. Apart from myself, the back of the truck was loaded entirely with Irish girls apart from Jacqueline who was Scottish, and I was treated to singalong versions of such classics as "You Say it Best When You Say Nothing at All". Things took an upturn when I demanded we start singing some Oasis and we arrived singing Champagne Supernova.
The party itself was, as expected, pretty nuts. It was much more crowded than the night before and loads of boats had come over from Koh Samui and Ko Tao. We didnt actually start dancing till 2am as we were just sitting on the beach and drinking. I found out Rovers had beaten Everton 3-2 over the course of the night too. The rest of the night was all a bit of a blur but we went back at around 6am just as the day was breaking, although Audrey stayed on for a bit longer.
The next day was a complete wipeout, and was spent either sleeping, sitting in the sun or trying to get food into me, with little success. I went for a bit of a walk in the afternoon while the girls were sleeping and wished I had a little more time here. I think in hindsight although I'm glad I went to the Full Moon Party, it was always going to be a little overhyped. The island itself is absolutely beautiful and I think if I was to come here again I'd come here for a few days and just time my trip to coincide with the party if possible, so the party was just the end of the stay on the island rather than the main purpose of the trip.
Jacqueline left in the evening and I got taken round various clothes shops by the girls, it was better than being sat in the hotel though! We all were absolutely exhausted and they had to leave at 6am the next day to go to Phi Phi and I had to leave at 8 to head back upto Bangkok. The next morning we said our goodbyes, although I have a feeling I'll be seeing Aoileann yet again sometime someplace and possibly Audrey too!
The journey over to Bangkok was an 11 hour one, with the first part being a 3 and a half hour catamaran journey over to the coast, with a bit of a wait followed by a 7 hour bus journey upto Bangkok. On the catamaran a girl called Pippa asked if the seat next to me was taken, and it turned out she was another medic, this time from UCL...we really do get everywhere! She had just done her elective too in Vietnam. We got put on different buses though and I got placed next to a Canadian girl with the fantastic name of Erika von Poser. She was great fun and we were soon talking about all sorts of things like bizzare "would you rather" questions focusing particularly on leg amputations and ladyboys, dub music and what would happen if a load of hundred-legged aliens attacked the planet. The rest of the bus probably thought we were a bit weird really. Got some skewers on the way aswell from a service stop which hit the spot, we had been told we would get a "buffet ticket" so I was holding out big hopes, but I think that was a bit of a mistranslation. Oh well..
Erika had to head home to Vancouver the following day and came with me to stay at Soi 1 as it was a lot closer to the airport than Kho San Road, where we'd been dropped off and where she originally planned to stay. I showed her the delights of a tuk-tuk for the first time...those things get a bad rep and I think they're a good way of seeing the city as you get around it. We got some food from a roadside vendor and did a fair amount of people watching. People watching is a great activity to be doing in Bangkok, even if it is a little disturbing at times. Especially when every second person you watch is an old Western man kopping off with a young Thai woman. Hmm...
Anyway this morning Erika left and I had plans to go see the tigers but theyre 2 hours away at least and I would have needed to get up early. Kind of regret not going now and still wondering what to do with my day...but it's Bangkok and I'm sure I'll find something!
