We were Somebody today...... you know, Everybody's Somebody in Luckenbach.
Luckenbach is just down the road from Fredericksburg but there are no signs (they get stolen) but it's not hard to find. Even if you don't care for country music Luckenbach is a fun place to visit...the main building is a general store/saloon that dates back to at least 1889 (some say 1849) and is full of all kinds of neat stuff to look at and buy if so inclined. It claims to have a population of just 3 but who's counting? It was 492 in 1904.
It was founded by a couple of German immigrants, one named Luckenbach. In the beginning it was a community trading post and one of the few to never break a treaty with the Comanches. In 1970 Hondo Crouch bought the town for $30,000... the post office closed in 1971. In 1973 Jerry Jeff Walker recorded an album there and then came Willie and Waylon's song a few years later.
Lots of famous country singers have played at the little stage and dance hall out back. It is mecca for all kinds of people who love county music. Lots of bikers were there on Saturday as well as daytrippers from Austin.
There is always music on the weekends at Luckenbach. Drew Womack was performing on our visit....he is a good singer and has written songs for other people...he wrote She's Got It All, Kenny Chesney's first hit. We loved listening and drinking Shiner Bock.
