mateiros, bit of a one horse town, but in a good way! i rested up here for about a week after my walk, its a good centre for exploring the jalapao, although i neglected this till the last two days. I was staying in a small hut with a hippy from Sao Paulo who ony ate what he grew in the garden. we would walk around the garden and he would point out which plants were venomous and which werent, before getting me to eat different leaves. although it crossed my mind many a time that he could have got mixed up i stuck with the general rule of wait 20 seconds after he eats it. probably not foolproof but it worked as a nice security blanket! and some of the leaves were actually pretty tasty, with lots of different flavours and uses. he also had more fruit than you could shake a stick at, which he often did to get it down from the branches and nuts, vegetables, roots etc etc. i spent a week just chilling out after my big long walk, eating lots(found a bakery with best banana cake EVER) and getting to know the locals. also went to a nihgtclub here for the local Saturday night party(Batistaca!) the club would rival most for worst location! it was a empty black indoor/outdoor room with one stobe light and the same eight songs on repeat the whole night. for the readers sake i would detail the bathroom but its worse than the worst u can imagine! although i have to admit it was an enjoyable party, even if abacaxi com muito molho

on the last three days i decided to get my act together, although it started badly with a failed few hitching hours(Mateiros not being traffic central!) but all worked out from the best when monsson season rolled in and i was glad to snooze away the wet hours rather than have spen them in the back of a pick up or in the shelterless desert. the next morning, armed with more resolve, i awoke early and within 15minutes i had a lift to Dunas, a desert located betwwen the jungle and mountains, with beautiful dunes! spent a while there, an swam in a beautiful lake in the middle of the desert, it was a stunning location. after walking out i sat at teh post waiting for my lift back. unfortunately i didnt have the same luck on the way back, i passed three hours chatting to the lady who lived at the fly infested post about the chick that had been born the day before but wouldnt stand up. she even offered to let me kill it, because she didnt have the heart to. and well if this rough and ready brasileira didnt have the heart there was no way city Seán was goin to be caught killing a little chirping ball of yellow fluff! im sure after i left it managed to stand and lived happily ever after!

next day i was due to leave, but in the mornign i organised a lift to see some other spots. hoped on the back of my new friends bike and off we went to cachoeira da formiga bouncing along a dusty trail, through streams and all. at the waterfall, i tryed to swim to the falls(my now regular cardio workout) but without success of actually beatin the current. the water here is unbelievable clear and clean and beautiful to swim in. after that bumped along to fervedouro, an oasis where the water bubbles up from the ground through the sand creating a boiling effect. as i walked in across the sand i took one step and dropped straight down. there is actually a big hole which you cant see because the bubblying water pushes the sand up to appear like solid ground. my guide got great amusement from my sudden plummet! its also strange here because you cant submerge yourself no matter how hard you try because of the bubbling sand and water pushing you up. its like being in an exfoliating jacuzzi(how masculine of me, i know!) after fervoudouro, it was back to Mateiros to catch my lift to Palmas
