visited a couple of local villages (almolonga and zunil) not far fromxela with a group from the school. the school ofers activities for cost every afternoon after school (classes go from 8am - 1pm), then u return home for lunch, then ur free.
almolonga is known for its agriculture and its market, zunil has a nice church and san simon...
i havenīt got too many words to describe san simon besides ībad assī. please read about him here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxim%C3%B3n
basically, heīs a mayan deity who (interestingly...) isnīt recognised by the church. he is dressed like a texsas cowboy, he constantly smokes real cigarretes all day (a man in the community wins the honour to maintain him each month) and he usually drinks 7 litres of hard liquor each day, all tho he can easily drink more than that. he can smoke and drink more than any man. people flock to him to ask for luck with money, health, etc. u can donate money, but he loves cigarettes and booze too (maybe more so!).
