so we spent a few nights in santa elena, which is near monteverde. the area is famous for its cloudforests, flora, fauna and touristy activities.
there is good hiking to be had. we did a trail called cerro amigos trail through a rainforest (only 1.8k high). was pretty funny - this cool little dog (we think it was a very young daschund crossed with other dog) started following us. we thought heīd eventually turn back home, but he stuck with us for 6 hours up and down this mountain. was classic. but then he kept following us and slept outside the hostel, followed us the next day, waited for us as we ate out or went to the shops. was a bit sad to leave him in the end, he was mighty cool. we named him rex after the austrian inspector. there are heaps of street dogs in costa rica but they have a de-sexing program set up and the dogs donīt cause any harm.
we hit up the monteverde reserve and saw some cool flora but not so much fauna... during the day isnīt the best time.
some locals told us of this mad tree nearby. it was about 35m long or so, but was on a slope and the tree curved over and down the slope, which meant the top of the tree was about 60m above the ground. anyway, this tree had been hollowed out and killed by a strangler tree and turned the inside of the truck into a passageway with conveniently positioned branches and holes in the trunk to climb it like a ladder. was a bit sketchy climbing it the first time but second time was heaps easier and less rattling.
we really enjoyed our time in santa elena... the people were really cool and it was heaps more laid back than la fortuna. if you wanted to do touristy stuff, cool. if not, just hang out with the locals. may stop by on way to S Am.
altho people in the reserves at the same time as us did see some...
