Six of us left for Leshan with hopes of seeing a giant Buddha (measuring 71 metres tall). It was built in AD 713 in the hope that he would calm the rapid river next to the town. Fortunately the river was tamed but some non-believers claim this to be because of the massive amount of rock poured into it while the Buddha was being created.
After a two hour journey we entered the park and climbed the stairs. At first we could only see the head poking above the cliff face which was enormous. However, to truly appreciate the grand scale of this carving we made our way down to the river edge and gazed in amazement. The only thing missing was some epic choir in the background since we were lucky enough to see the Buddha when the sun was shining over him like a scene from heaven.
After a brief pause we climbed back up the stairs and started to explore the mountain/park surrounding the giant Buddha. The area is very lush with birds chirping everywhere. The walk between sights was tranquil. I honestly thought the rest of the park would be average compared to the giant Buddha but I was surprised to find a village with many caves and gardens which proved to be a highlight of my visit.
You can easily spend an entire day wandering around the gardens and gawking at the increadibly detailed sculptures. The entire park was very peaceful ... probaby due to the Buddha's soothing chakra. I'm going to need to borrow some patience from the Buddha since I'm getting ready for a 26 hour train ride with nothing but a hard seat (the downside of the Chinese New Year), Fortunately I have my English friend to talk to and a fully charged iPod. Until next time people, stay poppin' (Americans :P).
