Cinque Terre, the five villages, four walks. Two challenging walks, one
easy and the other one has no place being described as more than a
gentle stroll (I mean there were girls in heels?). But all five
villages were spectacular viewing.
We stayed in the first town, Riomaggiore, in a lovely little apartment
with the smallest kitchen but the biggest terrace overlooking the
water! With that our first task involved heading to the beach (by beach
I mean area of land containing lots of rocks) and went for a swim. Who
doesn't love the warm mediterranian water?
Day one took us through the easier of the two walks - Via dell'Amore (Lovers Lane)
with all the padlocks and messages of love, whilst the second walk only
slightly made us wonder whether we had made the right choice in
footwear (jandles will be sweet eh?). What better way to reward our
hard efforts but a swim off the rocks!
Day two saw us navigate both of the harder of the two walks. It was time to
break in the new walking shoes (I mean we have lugged them all around
Europe it was about time we used them). Now we have done a lot of
walking on this trip, we have scorned almost any use of public
transport whilst in the cities so quite frankly we were pretty
confident this was going to be a peice of cake. While I wouldnt say
they were the biggest endurance test, we came to realise we have no
place walking up hills at the moment, especially in 35+ degree heat (an
in my case with no hat and a shaved head). These legs may be made for
walking but not the equivalent of step classes.
We absolutely loved it here and it was a fine way to end the Italian leg of our adventure!
