Moira (my sister) and family (Abito, Michelle and Kevin) are visiting with us this summer from Holland. Grandpa and Grandma decided to spoil us all again and treated us to a 5 day stay in Tavernier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tavernier,_Florida), which is located on the southern tip of Key Largo in the Florida Keys (http://www.fla-keys.com/). Rusty joined with his girlfriend Belen and her daughter Ana and with Hubert.

We drove down on Monday, July 19th and were scheduled to return home on Friday, July 23rd but Topical Storm Bonnie advanced our departure to Thursday evening. A tropical depression that formed over Puerto Rico had become a tropical storm and was forecasted to pass right over the upper keys (can't get more up than Key Largo) with the potential of becoming a hurricane. Being that we were with a bunch of kids and towing a boat and a wave runner we opted to depart the evening prior to be on the safe side. In the end Tropical Storm Bonnie came over Miami (not the upper keys - so much for weather forecasting) and other than some occasional strong winds all we got was some heavy rains and that was about it. Of course had we opted to stay Thursday night at the property then it probably would have become a hurricane and crossed right over us. Ce la vie.

Grandpa booked us 4 rooms at the Coconut Palm Inn (http://www.coconutpalminn.com/). This is a small place located on the gulf side of the keys adjacent to Tavernier Creek. It is very nice, quiet, well maintained, comfortable and scenic. Rooms vary from standard, to two bedrooms, to the honeymoon suite. All rooms are equipped with a small fridge; some have a kitchenette, while others have a full kitchen. There is a free boat ramp located directly adjacent to the property. Kayaks and paddleboats can be rented for free for guests staying at the property. Free continental breakfast is included. There is a small but nice pool located on the property. Although on the water there is no beach at the property and swimming is not an option unless you like sea grass.

On our first night my kids abandoned me as Rebecca wanted to sleep over with Michelle and Kevin, and Christopher wanted to stay with Hubert. So me all alone  :o(  and with regrets no room service - lol.

We spent our days out on the water for the most part. I was pulling the kids on a raft behind my wave runner or Rusty was letting them hydro slide (knee board) behind his boat. On two separate occasions Rusty and I ventured through Tavernier Creek (canal) to the Atlantic side of the island. When we were not on the ocean we were in the pool with the kids. On Wednesday afternoon I took Kevin, Rebecca, Hubert and Christopher to Jacobs Aquatic Center in Key Largo (http://jacobsaquaticcenter.org/). The kids had a blast here. They spent most of their time jumping off a 10-foot high diving board. I was totally impressed that they were fearless; especially my little man Chris. Check out the pictures and see for yourself  :o)

Each night another couple cooked for everyone else. Monday night Rusty and Belen served delicious / mouth watering tenderloin with a sweet potato mash. Tuesday night Moira and Abito served hot dogs and hamburgers. Wednesday night grandma and grandpa served lasagna. And then on Thursday night it was my turn, but as you already know we had to check out early due to Tropical Storm Bonnie. Too bad because I had quite some menu prepared. I mean I had lobsters and shrimp, fresh dolphin (not Flipper), hand picked asparagus from Peru that I had flown in that same morning and three bottles of Beaujolais (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaujolais_(wine) flown in from Paris. Ahhhhh too bad. There is always next time though. It's the thought that counts; right?  :o)

THANK YOU grandma and grandpa for this excellent family getaway. I know I speak for Moira and Rusty when I tell you that we all had an excellent time and only wish it could have lasted longer. You are the best. Love you both very much.
