Where I stayed
NH Barbizon Hotel

Late December I was asked by my employer if I could assist in a major project that was taking fold, and to do so I would need to work from our corporate office in the Netherlands (at Schiphol airport - http://www.schiphol.nl/). I ended up being there for three weeks.

It was a great moment for me to getaway as I was still dealing with the end of a relationship with an amazing woman who brightened up my life and made me feel alive again, but regretfully the timing of our encounter was off. Post divorce I truly believed that I would not know what love felt like again (other than that of a parents love for his children) therefore I am glad that she came into my life and proved me wrong. "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart."

I had spent new years in Aruba (http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog/a3dennert/37/tpod.html) and from there flew directly to Holland; arriving in Amsterdam on January 5th. I would call the NH Barbizon hotel (http://www.nh-hotels.com/nh/en/hotels/the-netherlands/amsterdam/nh-barbizon-palace.html?nhagentid=10166&nhsubagentid=101660000000) in downtown Amsterdam my home for the next 3 weeks, with the exception of the weekends when I stayed at my sisters home in Huizen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huizen).

At the office my colleagues and I said farewell to our boss (Fons S.) who decided to leave for greener pastures after 10+ years with the company; he will be missed. My colleague Anneke threw a farewell party for him at her place and with the assistance of Sophie (a former colleague of ours) they provided dish after dish of delightful treats. It was a most enjoyable evening spent with my departmental colleagues. The evening could not end before my traditional photo was taken with Anneke and Sophie. Hey ..... it's tradition and who am I to break such a tradition !!!  :o)

The weather during my stay was cold and while we had many days of snow I found it quite delightful to be honest. So long as you have the right clothing for that weather it is quite nice. Granted the blue-less skies can get depressing after a while. It was only on my final night that I experienced really lousy weather; rain and howling winds in single digit temperatures made for the most un-enjoyable outdoor experience. A slushy wet bone chilling mess is what you had. I guess that was my sign that it was time to go.

During my stay I was very fortunate to spend allot of time with my sister and her family. I had several snow ball fights with Michelle and Kevin. We managed to get out to the movies twice and enjoyed a nice dinner out at Restaurant L' Elefante Bianco in Laren (http://en.dinnersite.nl/restaurant/432694), which I believe is Kevinskies favorite. Kevin introduced me to the Wii (http://www.nintendo.com/wii), which I have learned to really like and am now considering getting one for myself. I also finally got to attend one of Michelle's dance contests. Michelle is in a "Color Guard / Flags" group called The Pride (http://thepride.nl/nl/index.php). The contest took place on 1/25 in Almere, and wouldn't you know it .... her group came in first place, again !!!!! Congratulations Michelle  :o)

I met with my cousin Frits Dennert whom I had not seen in 25+ years; it was great to see him again. I can not call him "Fritsje" anymore though.

I met with my cousin Imro Dennert for the first time. What a nice guy; just like a Dennert  :o)

I met with my good friend Jolijn B. and her son Derk. I received a nice home cooked meal and we enjoyed a nice dinner out at Eetcafe Van Beeren (http://www.dinnersite.nl/restaurant/442/van_Beeren/Amsterdam/Noord-Holland).

I met with Valery C. whom I last had contact with also some 20+ years ago. Valery and I went to school together back when we lived in Curacao (circa 1983). As crazy as it sounds but it did not feel like so much time had passed. Granted we now look so much better  :o)   but we reconnected instantly. Nice to have reconnected with a long lost friend. By the way .... she makes the best carrot soup !!!

I met with Henry S. Henry is the son of close friends of my parents. We had only met once before at my parents' house for all of 5 minutes. He remembered me, but unfortunately I did not remember him. I know his sister Laura better but that has to do with the fact that she lived close to my parents while Henry was moving around the country.

I also met with Danielle N. Danielle was my girlfriend many years ago and it was nice to see her again and meet her husband and two adorable kids (Gael and Maya). She invited Moira, Abitto, Kevin and I over for dinner one night. Heel gezellig.

Separately I met with three former colleagues of mine Sjoerd S., Hennie van D., and Paul N. It's always nice to keep in contact with those colleagues that you built a good working relationship with.

And then ...... there was ROOM SERVICE!

* WARNING - it is recommended you not be holding any hot beverages in your hand while you read this next true story.

Following my arrival in Holland I was on the train on my way from the airport to downtown Amsterdam when on Facebook (via my Blackberry) I received a friend request from this girl whom I did not recognize (we shall call her Ms. Booty Call). I do not care to add people to my Facebook profile unless it is someone with whom I have regular contact so I asked Ms. Booty Call whether we had previously met and if so where. Her response was "For me to know and you to find out". I thought to myself "Hmmmmmmmm" and after poking around on Facebook I discovered that she and I went to the same elementary school (Albert Schweitzer) in Curacao (although she was two years younger than I) and we shared two common friends on our profiles.

After some emailing back and forth we ended up having a telephone conversation that lasted well over two hours. Ms. Booty Call ended up confirming to me that we had not met each other in the past, but that she saw some of my pictures and quotes I posted on Facebook through a mutual friends profile and that this prompted her to contact me. Interesting and totally unexpected, right? Well that's what I thought up to this point. During our phone call we clicked on many levels as it turns out her x-brother in law was someone I worked with, and we knew allot of the same people in Curacao. At one point she asks me "So.... what are you doing right now?" and I told her that I had just ordered some room service and was lying in bed watching TV. Ms. Booty Call commented "I like room service", to which I responded "Well, that is what hotels are for!”

We ended up agreeing to meet for lunch the following week. She was going to be in Amsterdam for business so we agreed to meet at my hotel which was located directly across from Central Station which is where I would arrive into by train from the airport. We greeted one another and then I asked her where she would like to go grab a bite, to which she responded "I like room service!” Caught by surprise I laughed it off and we walked into town to find a restaurant. During lunch we had normal conversations, but I sensed something was off. She seemed .... bored. So after lunch we walked back to my hotel during which we agreed to meet again on a future evening for dinner and/or drinks. We said goodbye to one another and that was that. On my way back to the airport and the days following I kept having a weird feeling about our lunch - something was wrong.

The day prior to when we had agreed to meet for dinner I sent her a message in which I asked whether we would still be getting together. She replied with an apology stating that due to work reasons she would not be able to do so. I told her that was understandable and that perhaps in the future we could do so again, but in the meantime that it was nice to have met her. But, that feeling that I had from our lunch encounter was still bothering me, thus I decided to address this to her in the following message "Dear Booty. Did you contact me because you wanted to get to know me, or was it that you just wanted to have sex?" Her response to me was "I told you I wanted Room Service!", and that was the last I heard from her.

Soooooooo, what is the lesson we learned from this? Well, I learned that the next time a woman says she wants "Room Service" that "sausage" be available on the menu. Live and learn people!!! Live and learn!!!  Yes, this is the first time a woman wants to use me like a piece of meat. How cool is that - LOL.

Well that completes this blog. It looks like I will be returning to Holland in March to complete the final phase of the project I was here working on. Hasta la vista amigos.
