108 days and counting

We are going to do it! This is a once in a lifetime trip.

This tour (http://www.usa4corners.org) takes you around the continental U.S. and requires you to visit the four corners of the U.S., those being  San Ysidro, CA., Blaine, WA., Madawaska, ME., and Key West, FL. We have 21 days to complete the tour.

Rusty will be riding his BMW 1200RT, and whereas I had intended to ride my Honda Interceptor/VFR 800 I have elected to purchase a Kawasaki Concourse 1400 specifically for this ride.

We are scheduled to depart on July 26, 2008, and should complete the trip by August 17, 2008.

While we are at it we intend to accomplish one or more Iron Butt challenges (http://www.ironbutt.com). We are tentatively plannning the 50cc challenege from Jacksonville, FL to San Ysidro, CA in 50 hours.

47 days and counting

Because of the anticipated high summer temperatures we have opted out of performing the 50cc challenge at this time. Whereas we had originally planned to ride clock-wise from Key West to San Ysidro to Blaine and to Madawaska (performing the 50cc between Jacksonville and San Ysidro), we have now opted to avoid the southern states as much as possible and are now planning to "X" across the country by riding from Key West to Blaine, to San Ysidro, to Madawaska. See the below link to get an idea of the roads we intend to travel. When we commence our ride we hope to upload daily updates (data, pics and comments) on this blog.

Talk about bad luck. Yesterday I took my kids, along with my sister and her kids, to Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee (West Palm Beach), and while playing on the golf putting range I took a bad step and "crack/crunch" went my right ankle. Yep - ouch. I left my kids with my sister and rushed off to nearest hospital (Palm West) where they took some x-rays and reported that I had a severe ankle sprain (nothing broken). A splint (soft cast) was placed on and they graciously provided me with a pair of crutches - yipeee ... not !

So now I am doing my best to keep my ankle up and let it heal as this Friday I am going on a 3 day Bahamas cruise, which if need be I can get around in a wheelchair, but that has been tough with the kids being kids.

I intend to have one final update before the 26th which when Rusty and I will hit the open road. Wish me a speedy recovery ....  :o)   ...... thanks.

10 hours and counting

Well we now have 10 hours left before we officially start this tour and hit the road. Bags are packed, motorcycles have been serviced, and Day 1 is planned.

We intend to depart at 5am and expect  to arrive in Key West around 8am. We shall complete the required paperwork, take the required pictures, and obtain the required electronic fuel receipt and post these at the local USPS. Thereafter a quick breakfast bite at Denny's and then we head North. We intend to take the Turnpike to I-75 and hope to make it as far as Chatanooga, TN, but more than likely we will end somewhere just south of Atlanta.

All I have left to do at this time is to get my new video camera system hooked up to my helmet and/or bike, so this is my final pre-departure update. My ankle is still sore, but doing better. I have not been restsing it as much as I should have, but ce la vie. I hope it puts up with me on this ride. For the first time in my life I decided to chop off all of my hair leaving only a little fuzz (I hope this will help with the heat we are going to experience). Wanna see? Well a picture will be posted soon. You will just have to keep checking for updates  :o)

Ok, so wish us well and a safe journey. This is it. "We are doing this" !!!

George Hugony
Hey Rusty:

From the end of the world (Argentina) I sure envy the fun you'll have on your trip. Don't go over 100 mph (it's considered bad taste in some states).

Lots of luck and I'll be checking in on your blog.

George (Guadalupe's father)
