The Steep point journey was an interesting and long one, with lots of sand dunes and other obstacles along the way, going into it with a couple of useless maps to help us along the way with really no idea of how long it would take or even if we would make it!!.....

About 90kms out along the one and only road back towards the Overlander Roadhouse we got to the Useless Loop road turnoff, and there our journey began….. The road started out quite well along a bitumen two lane width road, which then after about 40ks became an unsealed but still decent road. Craig was then a bit upset as we kept passing on road caravans coming out and all of the reports we read said to avoid taking campers etc in. (Craig had wanted to camp in here somewhere) Anyway not before too long the road got rough, corrugated and pot holes were abundant. (He was then happy the camper was safe and sound in Denham)

Finally there was a sign posted section with Steep Point on it!! Phew we were heading in the right direction, so down went the tyres and on went the sand flag, and off we headed into the great unknown. The track was certainly a mixture, with very soft sand, hard sand, open wide spaces, very narrow tracks and then there were the crests you look into the sky and then teeter down the other side unable to see the bottom or even where you are on the track! Then there were the corrugations!!!!! It certainly had it all in our one day out!! We made a little (well - long) detour when a sign post came up along the track with Thunder Bay and Blowholes. Why not we say and off we head, well it seemed like we were heading in the wrong direction and when were we ever going to get anywhere! Finally there is the amazing coast and cliffs and wow were the blowholes amazing….. You stood on these cliffs and there were huge holes just everywhere that you could not see the bottom but the sounds were spectacular, then there were the tiny cracks in the rocks beneath us with wind and whistling come up from the ocean waves below!!!  As for the Thunder Bay cliff face, it is an awesome and site, views unlike anywhere else!

Next all we wanted to do was get to Steep Point and see what this track was leading us to, it was time for lunch and there was no where to stop but the end……

10ks out of Steep Point (surprisingly there was a sign) we come across the Ranger Residence, you had to check in and pay for National Park (we have the annual pass) or camping if you were camping. Now this is where we were amazed, over the crest we come across all these beach campsites – full!! There were boats, tents, people it really was unbelievable these people had towed all this gear out here and were on this breath taking beach having the time of their lives! (Even with all of these people not one of them had a sand flag on their vehicles which absolutely amazed Craig. As some of these crests and sand hills were extremely blind and could have proven somewhat dangerous) On we pressed and over a final crest we come across the end, ocean as far as the eye can see!!! Breathtakingly amazing, we had also just missed a pod of whales that had just moved down the coast – bugger shouldn't have detoured to Thunder Bay!!! He he he!!!  Lunch was enjoyed at this amazing place looking out into the huge ocean and towards Dirk Hartog Island.

We had left Denham at 9.15am and drove back into Denham at 5.15pm (we did detour into Shell beach on our way thru for a little foot dip in the water), it was a long but amazing day out, glad we hadn’t tried to take the van out there tho!! The pool was definitely refreshing that night after all the sand and sea air!!

Tomorrow will see us head off towards Exmouth…….

Jayden
It was cool being the most westerly person on mainland Australia!!!!! The blowholes were amazing and it was really cool 4wdriving.

Kyle
We all had a turn at being the most westerly person in Australia. The sand was really soft and we went up a lot of hills. It was really fun.

Teagan
We had fun on the berms on the way to Steep Point. It was really hard to write in the car. We went to the Cliff blowholes and Denham.

My favourite bit was you all taking turns to be the most westerly person in Oz, is there a spot near Alice where you can be the most central person?
